"Expressions of Courage®: Through the Years"
Art has long been an integral and indispensable part of the human experience. It has the unique ability to allow us to connect to other cultures and to other people. Through art, we learn about the artists' feelings, thoughts and philosophies.
Sponsored by Ortho-McNeil Neurologics division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharamaceuticals, Inc., in partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation, the Expressions of Courage® art contest was initially created to provide a way for children with epilepsy to express themselves through art. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the program expanded to include people of all ages.
By expressing the fear, hope and courage that stems from facing a serious neurological condition, the talented artists in the Expressions of Courage contest allow those unfamiliar with epilepsy to see the condition through the eyes of those living with it every day.
The "Expressions of Courage: Through the Years" exhibition is a collection of winning artwork from previous Expressions of Courage contests. Developed in February 2006 by the Society for the Arts in Healthcare and Ortho-McNeil Neurologics division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharamaceuticals, Inc., the exhibition aims to enhance public awareness of epilepsy and promote the arts as an integral component of health care. Selected by curators from the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, the exhibition represents a collection of pieces from nearly 200 winning entries, all of which illustrate both the profound effect that epilepsy can have on a human life and the courage many show in facing it.
Since 1995, the Society for the Arts in Healthcare has traveled exhibits to member organizations across the United States and Canada. Throughout 2006 and 2007, the "Expressions of Courage: Through the Years" exhibition will be on display at medical facilities nationwide, including:
